As a successful chapter comes to a close, Cogswell ASB prepares to transition power to a new Executive Board. Leading this team will be President Sam Silvers (GDA, GDE) and Vice President Cheyenne Mikailli (DAA).
“Initially, my reason for running was because someone asked me to,” says President Sam Silvers, “but I hit my ceiling on how much I could do as an officer of clubs only. I've continued into the ASB Presidency with the intention to further my efforts towards benefiting the student body with great outreach.”
Silvers is an outstanding student. For years, she has served as an active member and leader for multiple, successful clubs including the eSports Club, Game Development Club, Film Appreciation Club, and Dungeon Crawlers. She also works for student services as a tutor. Likewise, Mikailli is an active student with multiple titles under his belt. He is a co-founder and leader of The Cogswell Chronicle and The Cogswell Collective. He also works with Cogswell’s marketing office to promote the school through multimedia projects.
On April 4, 2018, Silvers and Mikailli answered questions from the student body at the ASB Town Hall. Among the topics they covered are helping clubs work together and come together in joint efforts, trying to make ASB more transparent and approachable, streamlining some current systems as much as possible, and very clear publishing of the methods and rules for navigating the bureaucratic processes required for budgets and events, all in an attempt to make ASB an approachable force.
Silvers and Mikailli intend to resolve the issue of the shared calendar between ASB and clubs being very cluttered with conflicting events. Their vision is for ASB to host fewer events alone and collaborate with other clubs to provide a united and new experience for students. The pair also intends to break down the barrier they believe stands between the ASB Executive Board and the students: “I want to maintain transparency of who people are,” says Silvers, “and [I want to] very much rearrange the ASB room. It's so easy in a room with only one group seating place for it to feel like a high school lunchroom clique table where only people already in that group may sit in there. I want to make the space feel both productive and welcoming.”
"I personally look forward to protecting the students’ best interest in meetings with the board. While it is always good to maintain a friendly relationship with the staff and faculty, ASB is first and foremost an organization that is meant to speak on behalf of the students," says Mikailli.
Silvers, Mikailli, and the newly appointed officers of the ASB Executive Board are expected to fully assume ASB operations at the beginning of the Summer 2018 semester. Those interested in joining Cogswell ASB as Associates can contact ASB@cogswell.edu.
