With the start of a new semester, Cogswell ASB hosted their very first school event that gave everyone a chance to go to their dream school: Hogwarts. Everyone interested in attending received an invitation at the Club Fair that was sealed with the Hogwarts crest, and the games began in the Dragon’s Den at 6pm on the 21st of September.
Attendees were encouraged to dress up in Hogwarts-themed attire, and many of them certainly took that to heart. Upon arriving, every student had a chance to be sorted by the all-knowing Sorting Hat into their Hogwarts house and receive a matching tie to wear with pride. The first hour of the event gave everyone a chance to mingle with their new teammates, personalize their own magic wand, and enjoy snacks featured in the movie such as chocolate frogs and Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans. Tasty beverages were also available, such as felix felicis, polyjuice potion, and liquid fire. “As cheesy as it sounds, I’d describe the atmosphere as magical,” noted attendee and sophomore DAA student Olivia Olórtegui. “My favorite part was being able to create my own unique wand that describes my personality, and having themed drinks and candy.”
At 7pm the party picked up its pace, and the games began. Each house chose different representatives to play in each game, and the winners of every game won points for their house. The games involved activities such as digging for gold coins like a Niffler, protecting Neville’s remembrall while riding a broomstick, and hunting for clues around the “castle” in a big scavenger hunt between all houses. “ASB made it feel as though we were actually at Hogwarts and a part of a wizarding community,” Olórtegui mentioned.
After the games were over, each house was given the opportunity to win extra points. Once all points had been awarded (and some taken away), Dumbledore announced the fourth, third, second, and first place houses. Slytherin, after almost taking a win, fell to last place. Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw fell at third and second place. Much like in the movies, Gryffindor, after spending most of the evening in dead last, made a huge comeback, taking first place and winning the house cup.
Every student from the winning house was awarded one prize of their choice from the mountain of goodies at the front of the Dragon’s Den. However, many other students were given the chance to win a prize as well in the raffle. The prizes included items like Funko Pop figures, plushies of mythical creatures, and other exciting collectable items.
This was a successful first ASB event of the Fall 2018 semester, and it certainly will not be the last. It was hinted at the party that there will be a Halloween event towards the end of October. If it’s anything like the recent Witchcraft and Wizardry night, it’s sure to be a blast, and any student who is available should attend.
