Starting March 1st, the Cogswell College campus will be open 24/7, and students are very excited for extended hours to work on campus.
“Campus being open will allow students to have full access to computer labs such as the Mac and Silver Monkey Labs,” GDE student Daniel McKernan says. “Certain classes and programs require products from Apple, for example, or more expensive software or tools that students may not have access to at home.”
Last semester, students requested that Cogswell ASB bring the issue of accessibility to the Cogswell Executive Team during their routine meeting. Originally, the campus was open until 1:00 A.M. on weekdays and 9:00 P.M. on weekends. The request from ASB was to give students extended hours during midterms and finals weeks, but the ultimate decision was made in favor of the campus being open 24/7, with some exceptions – such as shorter hours during breaks and holidays.
The new campus hours will give students more time to work on projects and assignments. Many had felt they did not have enough time to utilize the computers and software on campus because of the limited hours. “Several times, I ended up finding myself locked out of campus at inconvenient hours,” DAA student Logan Rightmier says about the new campus hours. “I am excited because this will be a great help for students who find themselves with less time.”
The decision came in tandem with the college hiring a security service to patrol campus after the string of break-ins and theft that occurred last semester.
“While the addition of the security guards will help to minimize some risk of vehicle break-ins, it does not remove the risk entirely.” Andrey Fedin, Vice President of Information Technology & Campus Services, notes via his email announcing the new security measures. “Please continue to take reasonable precautions when parking your vehicle or bicycle on campus.” He encourages students to remove items that may be visible from outside their vehicles – and to remember to lock their vehicles. When students are staying on campus late or overnight, they are advised to park their cars in front of the building. Those who ride bikes to campus should always use a “U-lock” and fasten their bicycles to a bike rack.
All students, faculty, and staff are required to wear a Cogswell College ID while on campus. The new security team may ask to see Cogswell IDs. Those who cannot show their IDs may be asked to leave the building.
