Welcome to another entry from our "Hello, I'm" series, where we ask someone out of the box questions you're dying to know about! In this edition, we're ruffing things up a little bit. We collected questions at cogswellchronicle.com and asked a local furry from good ol' Cogswell to shed some light on this topic.
How did you become a furry?
I’ve been interested in human/animal hybrids all my life. Mainly human/wolf, human/fox, human/feline hybrids. I didn’t realize at first that they were considered furries. I consider myself a furry, but I’m not too deep into the community. I guess you can say I’m an “outside” furry lol.
What does it mean to be a furry? That is entirely up to personal opinion. Some people think that you need to own a fursuit, draw furries as well as speak and act like one. Others (like me) just appreciate the anthropomorphic creatures and consider ourselves one. In short, if you can appreciate human/animal hybrids, you can be a furry.
Are any stereotypes true about furries? A lot of the bad stereotypes about furries are sadly true . . . but with any fandom, you’ll have your good side and your bad side.
What kind of furry are you?
I’m either a dog or a wolf. Haven’t really put too much time into it.
What is the average budget of a specialty item or accessory?
Fursuits are very expensive depending on the type of suit you want. They range anywhere between $2000 to $3000 from what I know (but don’t quote me on that).
Then again, you don’t need a fursuit to consider yourself a furry. You don’t need anything to be a furry. You just enjoy the lifestyle.
Do you think that the satisfaction/desire for furry dress is similar/different from other similar subcultures (cosplay, larping, non-trans crossdressing, Holloween)?
The satisfaction from dressing up in a fursuit or a tail with ears and paws, is in my opinion, no different from dresses up in a Halloween costume. It’s just a form of expression.
Does being a furry involve roleplay?
Being a furry does not require role play. It’s a fun thing to do which can also get out of hand really fast, but it it not required.
How do you feel about people thinking your community is 'perverse'?
How do I feel about people thinking my community is perverse...
I don’t really mind it. It’s among many things that are considered unacceptable. It bothered me at first but over time I got over it. Being gay also helped with that because a lot of people still think being gay is unacceptable. I try to not let people get to me about this kind of stuff, especially if they have no way of understanding it.
What do you want people to know about you and your community the most?
What I want people to know about most about me and my community?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a furry. A lot of people look down on those who call themselves furries because we’re weird or freaks but in truth, it’s the same thing as liking dungeons and dragons because you think that kind of stuff is cool or even being gay, because it’s what you are or how you feel. The community is essentially just chill people with similar interests in animals.
