Yes, yes, I know how preposterous that sounds. Us older millennials don’t like Cartoon Network’s Teen Titans Go!. It represents the entertainment industry’s cynical reselling of our childhood back to us and is just a toilet humor-ridden cousin-we-don’t-talk about version of our beloved 2003 hit show, Teen Titans. As soon as it came out, a lot of us didn’t even give it a chance. The wacky chibi version of the show you hold so dearly just doesn’t fit your sophisticated palette of DC Animated TV shows.
But in all honesty, this movie is nuts. It’s so good. You’re missing out.
That’s right, millennial, if you don’t watch this, you will experience FOMO (for you uneducated millennials who don’t know what that means, it’s “Fear of Missing Out”). Teen Titans Go! To the Movies is about Robin and the Teen Titans going on a crazy adventure to have their own movie, after humiliating themselves in front of the Justice League. The movie’s humor is a step up from the TV show and almost parodies itself: It’s a Teen Titans movie about how the Teen Titans aren’t cool enough to have their own movie. It stars the original cast (who is also the original cast from the first Teen Titans show, can you believe?) plus DC Comics characters voiced by an all-star cast including Will Arnett (Slade), Kristen Bell (Jade Wilson), Nicolas Cage (Superman), Jimmy Kimmel (Batman), Halsey (Wonder Woman), Lil Yachty (Green Lantern, yes John Stewart), and James Arnold Taylor as Shia LaBeouf (yes you read that right).
The movie itself feels like a very long episode of the show. It fits right in with its gross Cartoon Network-style humor but introduces a variety of jokes the show probably can’t afford on TV: more DC characters, references to Marvel and Disney properties like Deadpool and The Lion King, and a Stan Lee cameo. Yes, a Stan Lee cameo. That’s how random and ridiculous this movie is, but that’s the best part about it. We all crucify this show for being so “bad” (with most of us not even seeing it to give it a chance) but (take it from me, someone whose barely seen the show) this film is an unexpected good time.
So, fellow millennials, heed my word: Watch Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. And while you’re at it, go watch Teen Titans Go! on Cartoon Network when you get home. It’s a must-see and will tickle that sweet spot for nostalgia you hide in your 2000’s-loving soul.
Oh, but you’re too cool to see it. Okay. That’s no biggie. You’ll just be missing out on the post-credits scene that may or may not be related to your beloved original Teen Titans show… Like I said… FOMO.
