WHERE IS THE HAMILTON CAST NOW?

After the first Broadway show of Hamilton in August of 2015, the musical phenomenon swept the nation. People are still eager to get their hands on tickets, and catching the show at the Richard Rodgers Theater in New York still costs anywhere between $500 and $3800. However, not every original Broadway cast can stay performing the same show forever, and the original cast of Hamilton has moved on with other opportunities.

LIN MANUEL MIRANDA

The show’s primary writer, Lin-Manuel Miranda, has been very busy since performing as the main character, Alexander Hamilton. He and some of the previous Hamilton cast had parts to play in Disney’s recent animated movie, Moana. Miranda was primarily involved in writing music, and he also sings in one of the songs, “We Know the Way.” He has been cast in Mary Poppins Returns, which will be released in December of 2018, and is Producer for the In the Heights movie, which is based on the musical he wrote. However, Lin-Manuel Miranda will most likely return to play Alexander Hamilton again in January of 2019 for about three weeks.

PHILLIPA SOO

Phillipa Soo, whose role in Hamilton was Elizabeth Schuyler (Alexander Hamilton’s wife), became the lead in another Broadway musical, Amélie, which ran from March of 2017 until May of 2017. Soo also voiced a villager in Moana, and during the Super Bowl in February of 2017, she sang “America the Beautiful” with her Hamilton sisters, Renée Elise Goldsberry and Jasmine Cephas Jones. Later in 2017, she married fellow actor Steven Pasquale. Soo has been cast as Rebecca in the Broadway musical The Parisian Woman, which opened in November of 2017 and is still running.

LESLIE ODOM JR.

The dramatic performance of Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr may have been his most popular theater accomplishment, but he continues to pursue his passion for music. In 2016, he released a cover of Selena Gomez’s "Good For You" featuring his Hamilton castmate Daveed Diggs, and a new, improved version of his 2014 album Leslie Odom Jr. In the same year, he released a holiday album titled Simply Christmas. He played the role of  Dr. Arbuthnot in the film Murder on the Orient Express. Additionally (and as perhaps one of his most entertaining accomplishments) he performed “Cell Block Tango” at MCC Theater’s annual Miscast gala in 2015 with Jeremy Jordan, Walter Bobbie, Ben Platt, Joshua Henry, and Christopher Fitzgerald.

Although Hamilton was the most recent Broadway appearance for Renée Elise Goldsberry and Jasmine Cephas Jones, who played Angelica Schuyler and Peggy Schuyler, both continue to make appearances in films and TV shows. Goldsberry was in the TV films I Shudder and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and will be seen in TV shows and films not yet released, such as The Lion Guard and The House with a Clock in Its Walls. She also has a role in Altered Carbon.

As for Jones, she has been in a romantic relationship with fellow Hamilton cast member Anthony Ramos, who played John Laurens and Philip Hamilton. She also played Nicolette in the film Mistress America in 2015 and made an appearance as a shopgirl in a couple episodes of Girls in 2017.

CHRISTOPHER JACKSON & JONATHAN GROFF

The other main actors in Hamilton have also been seen on television and in films. Christopher Jackson, who played George Washington, provided the amazing singing voice of Chief Tui in Moana. Jackson also currently plays Chunk Palmer in the TV series Bull. Daveed Diggs, who played Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, was cast as the English teacher in Wonder, and will also have a role in Mary Poppins Returns. Diggs was also cast in a few episodes of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Jonathan Groff, who played King George III, voiced Kristoff in the popular Disney films Frozen and Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, and was cast as the lead in Looking: The Movie and the ongoing TV series Mindhunter.

Sometimes, after an actor’s big role in a popular musical or movie, we forget that they continue to pursue other opportunities to advance their career. While Lin-Manuel Miranda and his Broadway castmates may always be remembered for their stunning performances in Hamilton, it’s important to keep an eye out on the big screen for these talented actors and actresses in current and upcoming entertainment.
