So, you’ve played Destiny, and all of the expansions that came out with it - and didn’t like it for many reasons: The obsessive grind, loading times, small exploration areas, daily bounty cram… I understand completely.
Well, rise up Guardians! Gary (I mean Ghaul) is a new threat who wants to destroy all Guardians and take the Traveler’s light that lives within us (it’s worth mentioning that he took all of our loot too). So welcome Destiny 2 into your life and forget the idea of actually sleeping at night.
Let’s talk about the open world Bungie created. You can now travel to new planets that are breathtakingly beautiful and worth exploring. Once you travel to the planet of your choosing, you can talk to the NPC (Non-playable character) of the area for reputation and get actual quests. Yeah, not bounties like before because who likes talking to a bounty board anyway? AND there’s more to do in this vast expansion! Your fireteam can go on patrols, explore Lost Sectors, find Region Chests, embark on new Adventures, and rally in Public Events all marked on your map for convenience. Got yourself too deep in enemy territory? You can now Fast Travel to major places on the map without going into orbit or experiencing long load times.
The story of this game hits you like a truck - and then backs up over you, and hits you again (no spoilers, promise). Like I mentioned before, Ghaul is a Cabal general who is set on taking our Light. The Cabal is an alien race that’s strictly militarized and destroys worlds in order to conquer the galaxy. We met them in the first Destiny, but now they’re back and our Last City is their target. Within the first few missions of the game, you get the overwhelming sense that all hope is lost. And if it’s that sweet loot you’re after, there are a plethora of chests scattered around the world and “high-value targets” that will drop tons of loot. Rally to the flag to start Public Events that drop epic plunder and high-quality gear.
Long story short: go explore these skillfully-wrought worlds and gather tons of loot!
But first, suit up Guardians - Bungie has updated our weapon types and subclass abilities. The weapon types have changed from Primary, Special, and Heavy to Kinetic, Energy, and Power. This new format lets players have similar weapon choices for both Kinetic and Energy, like two Auto Rifles and then the one major ‘Power’ weapon. Never underestimate the power to auto-rifles against a horde of enemies. There are also weapon mods, shaders, and more customization features. Modifying these elements makes a major difference for the community and myself. Moreover, the subclasses are designed in a “tree” format now, which allows players to take full advantage of these skills and their playing styles. And Bungie has also added an Engram section in your inventory, so you can decrypt them later without your inventory filling up with all of that adventuring.
These changes to Destiny 2 are just what we needed - and Bungie has finally delivered. The game is amazingly fun, never stagnates, and has the capacity to keep growing as the community grows with it. The game still has its moments of strike playlist and constant raids, but these changes have made them more feasible, and even fun, while partying with your fireteam.
“So how’s your homework coming along?” Me:
